Hamburg was an important industrial city and was as a result attacked repeatedly by RAF's Bomber Command and the USAAF's 8th Air Force From the of autumn 1944 until the end of the war, oil production facilities were a major target for RAF's Bomber Command and the USAAF's Eighth Air Force. It was believed that attacking Germany's oil industry would ground the Luftwaffe and hinder the mobility of the German army.
