On 26 August 1945 Japanese officers, led by Lieutenant-General Takazo Numata and Rear Admiral Kaigye Chudo, arrived at Mingaladon airfield near Rangoon, Burma, to begin preliminary negotiations for the surrender of Japanese forces in south-east Asia. The agreement signed in Rangoon was a preliminary step, the formal surrender taking place in Singapore on 12 September 1945.
