Mountain Rescue Badge, Blue/Grey
Formed during the Second World War, the RAF's Mountain Rescue Service provides search and rescue capabilities primarily for the recovery of crashed aircrews in difficult terrain.
Apart from a small permanent headquarters staff, all members of the Mountain Rescue Service (MRS) are volunteers. Currently there are three MRS teams in the UK, they are based at RAF Valley, RAF Kinloss and RAF Leeming. Personnel can be deployed across the UK or globally in response to an emergency. RAF MRS teams frequently assist civilian emergency services in rescue operations, including mountain rescues, medical evacuations, and other emergencies in difficult terrains.
