RAF Mountain Rescue Badge
The RAF Mountain Rescue Service was founded during the Second World War, in recognition of the number of RAF aircraft accidents on high ground areas of the mainland UK. Team members were initially drawn ad hoc from RAF station medical and ground crew.
Today team members are capable mountaineers with specialised training in rescue techniques and navigation. They are all volunteers for whom mountain rescue is a secondary duty. They are awarded this special service badge on completion of the first part of their training.
