Aerial Gunner's badge, Pattern 1923
The Aerial Gunner's badge was introduced in 1923 and was worn on the upper sleeve of the right arm, it was discontinued in 1939 with the introduction of a new cloth badge to be worn on the left breast.
Despite having had air gunner's during the First World War, the RAF reorganised aircrew roles in the early 1920s abolishing all non-commissioned aircrew trades other than pilot. Air gunners were to be recruited from non-technical ground trades who would volunteer on a part time basis to be air gunners, for which they received extra pay.
