Nose of Sepecat Jaguar GR.1A XZ375, "The Guardian Reader", Muharraq, 2 March 1991
This photograph was taken while the Jaguars from RAF Coltishall were deployed on Operation GRANBY, the codename given to the British military response to liberate Kuwait after Saddam Hussein's invasion in 1990.
Between 16 January and 28 February 1991, the RAF Jaguar Detachment (JagDet) at flew 158 missions against Iraqi forces, conducting reconnaissance and bombing Iraqi forces artillery and missile positions during Operation Desert Storm. The Jaguars represented less than one sixth of the RAF fast jets deployed, but flew almost one third of the Service’s offensive sorties, proving highly effective. The aircraft had been repainted in theatre, given a desert pink scheme and customised nose art.
