Anniversary of the Battle of Britain: Thanksgiving week
Programme for Thanksgiving Week held between 15-22 September 1945. The week of events was held to promote the purchase of savings stamps to help pay for the war effort and post-war reconstruction. It was hoped that £125 million would be raised during the week.
September 15 was first officially recognized as Battle of Britain Day in 1943, commemorating what was considered one of the most decisive days of the battle in 1940. On the same date in 1945, a large scale flypast took place over London, featuring approximately 300 aircraft. The formation was led by Douglas Bader, a double amputee and renowned fighter pilot, which also included many veterans who had taken part in the battle.
