Bristol Jupiter VIIIF.P
The nine-cylinder radial Bristol Jupiter engine was designed by Sir Roy Fedden and Leonard Butler. Many of these popular engines were built overseas. This version of the Jupiter was fitted to Westland Wapitis, forerunners of Westland Wallaces.
The Jupiter engine was originally designed by Roy Fedden in 1918. It became a reliable and popular powerplant through 30 iterations, with over 7000 units built. Variants powered the RAF’s Bristol Bulldog and Gloster Gamecock among many others, and by 1929 including overseas licence-built examples it had flown in over 200 different aircraft types. The Westland Wapiti was a two-seat general purpose biplane which entered RAF service in 1928 and was used across many theatres before withdrawal in 1940.
