Airborne lifeboats were developed to assist in the rescue of downed airmen. Group Captain Edmund Francis Waring commissioned Lieutenant Arthur Cecil Robb RNVR to design the first.
The Airborne Lifeboat Mk.IIA was designed to be carried by Avro Lancaster aircraft. They were converted from Airborne Lifeboats Mk.II which were designed by Uffa Fox for Vickers Warwick aircraft, replacing the Airborne Lifeboat Mk.IA.
