Armstrong Whitworth Apollo (G-AIYN), 2 September 1949
Armstrong Whitworth Apollo (G-AIYN), 2 September 1949.
The Armstrong Whitworth A.W.55 Apollo was designed to Brabazon Committee specification 2. It was powered by four Armstrong Siddeley Mamba turboprop engines and made its first flight on 10 April 1949. Problems with the engines, however, hampered its development and it never entered production, unlike its competitor, the Vickers Viscount.
