The Avro Lancastrian was a long-range transport version of the Avro Lancaster bomber. The first were converted in Canada for Trans-Canada Airlines. G-AKDR was originally one of those converted in Canada.

Four Avro Lancastrian XPP versions were acquired from Canada in 1947 by Flight Refuelling Ltd. They were converted for use as tanker aircraft to carry fuel and operated into RAF Gatow during Operation Plainfare, the Berlin Airlift. The aircraft were withdrawn from use at Tarrant Rushton in 1951 and scrapped.
