Medal Bar of Flight Sergeant Avis Hearn
The Military Medal was awarded to Avis Hearn for gallantry during the Battle of Britain when she was an Acting Corporal.
On 18 August 1940 Avis Hearn was working in the receiver block at RAF Poling Chain Home radar station when it was attacked by enemy bombers. Despite bombs landing all around her, Hearn remained alone at her post operating the radar set. Her building had all of the windows blown out, walls were cracked and the noise was terrific. For her courage and devotion to duty at remaining at her post, Hearn was later awarded the Military Medal for gallantry. Medals, from left to right: Military Medal, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939–1945.
