John Allman Hemingway was identified as the last surviving pilot who served during the Battle of Britain in 1940. He flew Hawker Hurricane aircraft with No. 85 Squadron RAF.
John joined the RAF in 1938, was commissioned as an Officer in 1939, and served with No. 85 Squadron during the Battle of France and the Battle of Britain in 1940. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1941. The photograph was taken while he commanded No. 43 Squadron in Italy in 1945. He eventually retired from the RAF in 1969.
