Aircraft Recognition Chart: Defiant I & II (Merlin)

Aircraft recognition charts were an essential training tool in learning to recognise aircraft. They depicted silhouettes of both allied and enemy aircraft and were used to help military personnel quickly identify whether an aeroplane was friendly or hostile. The Boulton Paul Defiant was a multi-seat fighter aircraft. The Defiant Mark I was a two-seat turret fighter, fitted with a Rolls-Royce Merlin III engine. The Defiant Mark II was a two-seat night fighter fitted with a Rolls-Royce Merlin XX engine and AI Mk IV aircraft interception radar.
