20 Squadron RFC Christmas card sent by Sgt Thomas Mottershead VC to his son, 1916
Sgt Thomas Mottershead sent this his card to his son in Christmas 1916, and was killed a few weeks later.
On 7 January 1917, he was flying a routine patrol over Ploegsteert Wood with his observer, Lt WE Gower, when their FE2d A39 encountered Albatros fighters. Hit by enemy fire, the fuel tank exploded in flames. With clothing alight, Tom resisted the urge to crash, saving Lt WE Gower, who was thrown clear. He suffered severe burns and died five days later. He received the Victoria Cross for his bravery.
