Magazine, Vickers Gas Operated Machine Gun
The Vickers Gas Operated machine gun was selected to replace the Lewis gun and was introduced into Royal Air Force service in 1937. It fired bullets from round pan-shaped magazines, which held upto 100 rounds
However, the size and shape of the magazine interfered with the wing structure of fighter aircraft and prevented the VGO’s use as a wing-mounted weapon. Rendered obsolete by the belt fed Browning .303in gun the VGO had been mostly replaced on RAF aircraft by 1945.
