Recording of an interview with Mr D E O Nicholson, 19 May 1971
Interview with Mr D E O Nicholson, who served in the Royal Flying Corps as a ground wireless operator in France and Italy during the First World War.
Mr Nicholson applied to join the Royal Flying Corps on the outbreak of war. He trained as a wireless operator at Castle Bromwich and was posted to 19 Squadron at Netheravon. In 1916 he went to France as a ground wireless operator attached to artillery units. In 1917 he went to Italy in the same role. He describes in great detail the procedures used in aerial spotting for artillery units.
