Recording of an interview with Wilfred Russell, 25 May 1979
Interview with Wilfred Russell, who flew patrols over the Indian Ocean in Westland Wapitis during the Second World War. After returning to the UK he worked on German disarmament.
Wilfred Russell trained with Cambridge University Air Squadron during the 1930s and with 27 Squadron at Risalpur during the Second World War. He flew Westland Wapitis on maritime patrols and remembers Japanese attacks on Colombo. He converted to the Catalina with 240 Squadron. On return to the UK in 1944 he trained personnel for disarmament work in Germany and then served with 8801 Air Disarmament Wing in Norway.
