No. 1 1920 Pattern Officer’s Jacket of Baron Newall of Clifton
This No. 1 Dress jacket is part of a uniform worn by Baron Newall for ceremonies and other special events after he had retired.
It is a single-breasted, four button jacket with roll-step collar, two flap and button, pleated breast pockets with two flap and button bellows pockets in the skirt and a centre rear vent. It has an integral fabric belt with two-prong gilt buckle. The black and pale blue rank lace at the cuffs indicate the rank of Marshal of the Royal Air Force. Sir Cyril Newall qualified as a pilot in 1911 and served in the First World War. As Chief of the Air Staff from 1937 until 1940, his support for Dowding and his air defence system had a major impact on RAF success in the Battle of Britain.
