Type F.N.1
Faster aircraft speeds made it hard for gunners to control their machine guns. Frazer-Nash produced a hydraulically powered turret which included a shield for the gunner. The ‘lobster back’ turret was fitted to the Hawker Demon fighter.
The turret was operated hydraulically, using power taken from the aircraft’s engine. Fitted with a single 0.303 Lewis gun it could be considered the forerunner of future gun turret positions on RAF aircraft. However, the extra weight of the armoured turret reduced the aircraft’s top speed.
