Chequered Hat Band, RAF Cosford
Boy Entrants wore a chequered hat band as part of their uniform. The colours of the hat band displayed, known as 'rhubarb and custard', were unique to RAF Cosford, which was one of the principal Boy Entrant training stations.
The RAF Boy Entrant Scheme ran from 1934 to 1965, and offered boys aged 15–17 structured training in a technical ground trade alongside more general academic study. Opportunities for sports, hobbies and flying experience were also available and over 100,000 boys were trained under the Scheme.
