VE Day Thank God.....And now mine’s a pint!!!
Serving in the Royal Air Force as a pilot at the time, Flight Lieutenant Chance recorded his reaction to Victory in Europe in his flying logbook.
Born in Jamaica David Errol Chance volunteered to join the Royal Air Force in 1941 while in the UK. He was selected for pilot training and undertook this in Canada as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. During 1944 he served in the Middle East with No. 603 Squadron undertaking strike operations against enemy shipping in the Aegean Sea. He joined No. 248 Squadron in January 1945 piloting De Havilland Mosquito fighter-bombers on anti-shipping strikes over the North Sea during the last weeks of the war. Leaving the RAF in July 1951, Flight Lieutenant David Chance settled in Britain. His experiences highlight the diversity of effort and service to be found within the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. His handwritten entry captures his reaction to VE Day but one that he would not have been alone in feeling.
