Medal Bar of Flight Lieutenant Andrew Crawford Rankin McLure
Andrew McLure flew with No. 87 Squadron during the Battle of Britain.
After joining the RAF Volunteer Reserves in 1939 as a trainee pilot, McLure was called to full time service at the beginning of the Second World War. In action off Portland Bill in August 1940, he claimed to have destroyed a Messerschmitt Bf 109, after which he was forced to land near Weymouth. Although he sustained injuries during the landing, he was back on operations later that month. McLure joined No. 51 Operational Training Unit in July 1942 and just two days later, while giving an air experience flight to groundcrew, was involved in a fatal mid-air collision. Medals, from left to right: 1939–1945 Star with Battle of Britain clasp, Air Crew Europe Star, 1939–1945 War Medal.
