To Public Shelters Sign
In 1938, when war seemed inevitable, local authorities were required to provide public shelters in case of enemy bombing. Signs such as this, a rare survivor, guided the public to their nearest shelter.
In Hendon, underground shelters were built in local parks including Sunny Hill Park and Montrose Playing Fields. In 2010, the Hendon and District Archaeological Society excavated the shelters in Sunny Hill Park and recovered the sign, which had been incorporated into a fence and donated it to the RAF Museum.
