The Fédération aéronautique internationale (FAI) Henry De La Vaulx prize awarded to Flight Sergeant Thomas David Dixon a wireless operator on the Royal Air Force’s attempt to establish a new long-distance non-stop record flight in 1938
In November 1938 three aeroplanes from the RAF’s Long Range Development Unit attempted a long-distance non-stop record flight from Ismailia, Egypt to Darwin, Australia. Two aeroplanes completed the11,520 kilometres (71582 miles) flight in 48 hours but the third piloted by Flight Lieutenant Henry Hogan with Flight Sergeant TD Dixon and Flight Lieutenant RG Musson had to land in Timor before continuing the journey to Darwin, their distance was approximately 10,715 kilometres (6,658 miles)
