The basic design of this unguided high-explosive bomb dates from the Second World War it was declared obsolete in 2019.

Bombs such as this 1,000lb bomb were gradually replaced with the development of precision guided munitions from the 1980s. However, they remained in use as they were comparatively cheap and with advanced targeting computers could be dropped with a relative degree of accuracy.
