Recorded interview with Squadron Leader George Leonard Johnson, 29 May 2013
Squadron Leader George “Johnny” Johnson, who was an air gunner and bomb-aimer with 97 Squadron and a bomb-aimer with 617 Squadron during the Second World War, including the dams raid.
Johnny Johnson remembers training in the United States and UK before joining 97 Squadron. He joined Joe McCarthy’s crew as a bomb-aimer and transferred with the crew to 617 Squadron. He describes training for the Dams raid, modified Lancasters, the ‘Upkeep’ weapon, height flown and bomb-sights used. He gives an account of the attack on the Sorpe Dam and reflects on the raid. He then describes his later RAF service.
