Nimrod MRA4 First Delivery Medallion, 2010
This medallion was produced to mark the delivery of the first Nimrod MRA.4 maritime patrol aircraft in 2010. The project had cost over £3 billion pounds and was over a decade late in delivery, however, there were still concerns about the aircraft's airworthiness and in 2010 the project was cancelled and all the the airframes scrapped.
The Nimrod MRA.4 was a planned upgrade to 21 Nimrod MR.2 maritime patrol aircraft. However, the project was more than an upgrade requiring large parts of the aircraft to be rebuilt, as a consequence the project over ran in costs and time and was cancelled in 2010. The cancellation left the RAF and the UK with a capability gap in maritime reconnaissance and attack until the delivery of the Boeing MRA1 Poseidon in 2019.
