Charred identity card of Flying Officer John Wilcox of no. 72 Squadron, who was shot down during the Battle of Britain on 31 August 1940.
No.72 Squadron had been directed to intercept a formation of approximately 160 enemy aircraft over the Kent coast, a dog fight ensued over Dungeness during which Wilcox was shot down and killed, his Spitfire crashing near Staplehurst, it is believed that this identity card was recovered from his body.
