Medal Bar of Air Marshal Sir Leonard Horatio Slatter. He was awarded the DSC and bar for nine combat victories and for his bombing attacks on Zeebrugge Mole His DFC was a 1919 New Year's Honour and therefore without citation.
Slatter enlisted in the Royal Naval Air Service. He served in Belgium and France before training first as an observer and then as a pilot. In 1917 Slatter flew with the St. Pol Defence Flight (which was later expanded to become Naval 13 Squadron) which operated against German seaplanes, as well as escorting both naval units and American flying boats on anti-submarine patrols. Slatter, flying night operations, shot down a Gotha bomber which landed at Nieuport and was captured. Slatter's medals include the Distinguished Service Cross (bar), Distinguished Flying Cross, 1914-15 Star, War Medal 1914-1918, Victory Medal (with Mention in Despatches), 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-45 (with Mention in Despatches), Silver Jubilee Medal 1935, Coronation Medal 1937, Order of St. Stanislas, 5th Class (Imperial Russia)
