Papers of Leutnant Alfred Heinzl, 23 November 1939-22 February 1941
Collection of two flying log books and eight monochrome photographs.
Leutnant Alfred Heinzl was a pilot of Dornier Do 17 and Heinkel He 111 aircraft. He flew on bombing operations with Kampfgeschwader 27 during The Blitz. On the 3rd March 1941, the Heinkel which Heinzl was piloting attacked shipping off the the west coast of Ireland. The aircraft was damaged by return fire from the MV Port Townsville. One of the crew was killed and the aircraft force landed on a beach. The four survivors were interned for the remainder of the war. Heinzl remained in Ireland after the war and became a notable member of the Irish gliding community.
