John Ward flew Lightning aircraft in the UK and Cyprus, and as an instructor. He flew F106 aircraft in the United States. He supported Falklands War and Gulf War operations.
John Ward flew Lightnings with 56 Squadron at Wattisham and Akrotiri and 5 Squadron at Binbrook. He was an Interception Weapons Instructor and a Lightning conversion unit instructor. He flew F106 aircraft in the United States, completed RAF Staff College at Bracknell and worked on war plans, including the Falklands War. He was wing commander operations at RAF Coningsby and supported Tornado in Saudi Arabia, including the 1991 Gulf War.
