Douglas Smith completed his RAF national service as a fighter plotter. He remembers work at 11 Group Southern Sector Operations Centre at RAF Sopley and detachments to several different stations.

Douglas Smith remembers his national service call-up and basic training at RAF Wilmslow. He then went for on-the-job training as a fighter plotter at 11 Group Southern Sector Operations Centre at RAF Sopley. He describes his work and its place in the fighter control system. He recalls detachments to different stations, including work with ground attack training targets at Leysdown, and gives his views on the value of national service.
