Tirpitz Anchor Chain Link
The Tirpitz was the largest battleship in the German Navy’s fleet with a loaded displacement of 52,600 tons. This single link of the anchor chain, which alone weighs 66lbs / 30kg was presented to the RAF Chief of the Air Staff by the Royal Norwegian Air Force on 9 June 1992.
The Battleship Tirpitz itself was launched 1 January 1939, and capsized in a Norwegian Fijord 12 November 1944 following an attack by Bomber Command Avro Lancasters. The hulk of the ship was mostly scrapped postwar, (1949 to 1957) although some parts do remain where the ship sank.
