The prototype Bristol 171 first flew on 24 July 1947. The type was selected for the RAF as the Bristol Sycamore for anti-submarine and search and rescue operations.

The Bristol Sycamore HR.14 was the main version to serve with the RAF, with 80 being delivered. The type equipped search and rescue squadrons and supported the British Army in the UK, Cyprus, Malaya and Borneo. The type remained in service on communications duties with No. 32 squadron until 1972.
