Flying Officer Akinfolabawale ‘Akin’ Shenbanjo, a Wireless Operator/Air Gunner from Nigeria with No. 76 Squadron crewmates. The crew named their bomber aircraft ‘Achtung! The Black Prince’ in his honour.
Akin Shenbanjo came from Lagos in Nigeria and travelled to the UK to enlist in the RAF. He passed out as a Wireless Operator in August 1942 and initially worked on the ground, before applying for aircrew training. He was commissioned Pilot Officer in July 1944. In December of that year, he was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross. He survived the Second World War and left the RAF in 1953.
