Recorded interview with Luke Toft, who was a civilian draughtsman with the Aircraft Torpedo Development Unit at Gosport during the Second World War. He describes various aspects of torpedo development.
Luke Toft trained as a workshop apprentice, recalls see the Battle of Britain overhead and later joined the Ministry of Aircraft Production. He explains how he worked with the Aircraft Torpedo Development Unit at Gosport as a draughtsman. He remembers the response to Churchill’s call for a bigger torpedo and the use of Beaufighter aircraft for torpedo testing. He remembers preparations for D-Day and describes the components of a torpedo.
