Interview with Alan Lacy, who served as an RAF pilot in Sunderland flying boats during the Second World War. He describes attacks on German U-boats in the Bay of Biscay.
Alan Lacy trained as a pilot in Sunderland flying boats. He describes the aircraft’s crew and the facilities carried onboard, and remembers operations over the Bay of Biscay with 228 Squadron. He describes the use of the Sunderland’s radar, attacks on German U-boats and the danger posed to Sunderlands by German Junkers 88 aircraft. He then became an instructor on Wellington aircraft and remembers baling out after a mid-air collision.
