Bob Pountney served as an air quartermaster in Britannia transport aircraft and a winchman in Whirlwind, Wessex and Sea King helicopters. He describes various aspects of search and rescue operations.
Bob Pountney joined the RAF in the Supply Branch. He trained as an air quartermaster and served in Britannia transport aircraft of 99 Squadron. After training as a helicopter winchman he flew in Whirlwind, Wessex and Sea King helicopters of 22, 28, 72 and 202 Squadrons. He participated in operations around the Piper Alpha oil rig fire and was involved in an accident on Creag Meagaidh on 28 January 1989.
