Recorded interview with Warrant Officer Roger Maclean, 24 May 2022
Roger Maclean served with 18 Squadron during the 1982 Falklands War and survived the sinking of the requisitioned cargo ship Atlantic Conveyor, together with three of 18 Squadron’s Chinook helicopters.
Roger Maclean began his career as an RAF instruments fitter before moving to avionics following a trade restructure. He explains how he deployed for the 1982 Falklands War with 18 Squadron and how the cargo ship Atlantic Conveyor, carrying the squadron’s Chinooks, was hit by an Argentinean Exocet anti-ship missile. He remembers abandoning ship and being rescued by the Royal Navy frigate HMS Alacrity. He then returned to the UK.
