Recorded interview with Master Aircrew Paul Gibson, 26 May 2022
Paul Gibson was a loadmaster with 18 Squadron in Bravo November, the only Chinook helicopter to survive the sinking of the cargo ship Atlantic Conveyor, during the 1982 Falklands War.
Paul Gibson joined the RAF as an aerospace systems operator before training as a helicopter loadmaster. He explains how he deployed for the 1982 Falklands War with 18 Squadron and how the cargo ship Atlantic Conveyor, carrying the squadron’s Chinooks, was hit by an Argentinean Exocet anti-ship missile. He was airborne at the time in the squadron’s surviving Chinook, Bravo November, and flew operationally through the rest of the war.
