Interview with Roger Carter, who served as an armourer on Shackleton and Valiant aircraft, including participation in nuclear weapons testing in Australia and the Pacific during Operations Buffalo and Grapple.
Roger Carter served as an RAF armourer, working initially on Shackleton maritime patrol aircraft of 224 Squadron in Gibraltar. He was posted to 1321 Flight at RAF Wittering, which later became 49 Squadron, equipped with Valiant bomber aircraft. He describes his participation in nuclear weapons testing in Australia and Christmas Island in the Pacific as part of Operation Buffalo and Operation Grapple, including the experience of witnessing a nuclear detonation.
