Herbert Chaplin joined Fairey Aviation Co. Ltd. in 1930 as a senior draughtsman having worked previously with George Parnall & Company Ltd. He had worked on most Fairey aircraft since his joining the company and in 1945 was appointed chief designer, a post he would retain until his retirement in 1957.
