Collection of combat reports, 1939-1945
Combat reports were official documents detailing operational encounters with enemy aircraft, and a vital intelligence source. This extensive collection features over 16,000 original reports, organised by squadron. They cover actions by squadrons in Bomber, Fighter, and Transport Command, as well as Fleet Air Arm Squadrons, Merchant Ship Fighter Units and the Air Transport Auxiliary.
Aircrew would submit personal combat reports soon after returning to base. These detailed the dates and times of individual encounters, altitude and general location, as well as the effectiveness of weaponry against enemy aircraft. Intelligence Patrol Reports, confirming individual pilot reports, were filed by squadron intelligence officers. Command headquarters received summaries of combats conducted by squadrons within a Group.
