Royal Navy, Mk. 3, lifejacket
Lifejacket was issued to Chief Technician Peter Jack, a member of the ground crew of No. 18 Squadron, who sailed to the Falklands during the conflict aboard the SS Atlantic Conveyor.
The SS Atlantic Conveyor was a British merchant vessel requisitioned to transport aircraft, personnel and supplies to the South Atlantic after the Argentine invasion of the Falkland Islands in 1982. On 25 May 1982, it was struck by two Exocet missiles fired from Argentine Super Étendards. The ship quickly caught fire due to an Exocet hitting the engine room and starting a blaze which ignited incendiary cargo held on the ship. Orders to abandon ship were given. Peter Jack found that the rope ladder placed over the side of the ship in order to get to safety was partly blown away, so he was forced to leap 25ft into the sea where he then inflated his life jacket before being rescued. After the fire onboard the ship had burned out, she was taken under tow, however, she broke in two and sank. 12 men perished on the Atlantic Conveyor.
