Wartime log of Flight Lieutenant Rowland Michael Veal, 1943-1945
Prisoner of war log kept by Flight Lieutenant Rowland Veal. The log contains an account of The Long March, details of foods and calorie content. Also includes photographs and pencil sketches of aircraft.
Flight Lieutenant Veal was piloting a North American Mustang Mk I of No. 239 Squadron on 21 July 1942. Flying an armed reconnaissance sortie to photograph aerodromes in the Le Harve area and Seine Valley accompanied by another Mustang from the Squadron. After attacking targets of opportunities, the aircraft were attacked by six Focke-Wulf Fw 190s during which Veal was shot down, the other Mustang managed to avoid being shot down and returned safely. Flight Lieutenant Veal would spend the remainder of the war as a prisoner.
