File of papers investigating the torture and murder of Sgt Arthur Banks. For his endurance and courage, Sergeant Banks was posthumously awarded the George Cross.
Sergeant Arthur Banks was shot down on operations over Italy in August 1944. Whilst attempting to return to Allied lines Sergeant Banks and the Italian partisans who were assisting his escape were captured. Sergeant Banks endured brutal interrogations and torture by his German captors before he was handed over to Italian fascists who further beat and tortured him before he was bound and thrown in the River Po. Sergeant Banks escaped only to be recaptured and shot in the head.
