The General Post Office, O'Connell Street, Easter Rising, Dublin 1916

In April 1916 Dublin suffered damage when British troops fought Irish volunteers who sought independence for Ireland. Independence was declared at the Dublin Post Office. Eventually, the volunteers were forced to surrender.

On 24 April 1916, Irish volunteers took control of several building in Dublin, seeking independence for Ireland. The British Government sent British troops into the city to end what became known as the Easter Uprising. The use of artillery damaged many buildings and caused civilian casualties. The volunteers in Dublin surrendered on 29 April 1916.
