Recorded interview with Flight Lieutenant Arthur Spencer, 22 May 2025
Arthur Spencer was a navigator in Lancaster bomber aircraft of 97 Squadron, including raids on Peenemünde and Berlin. In Dakota transport aircraft, he participated in the Berlin Airlift of 1948-1949.
Arthur Spencer trained as a navigator in the US and the UK, and flew bombing operations in Lancaster bombers of 97 Squadron. He recalls how 97 Squadron became part of the Pathfinder Force and remembers Pathfinder operations, including the Peenemünde raid of August 1943 and attacks on Berlin. He explains how he flew further operations from Italy and describes his involvement in the Berlin Airlift while flying Dakota transport aircraft.
