Matt Haslam describes his experience as an RAF nurse with the Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) in Afghanistan. He explains the MERT’s role in casualty evacuation flights, using Chinook helicopters.

Matt Haslam trained as a civilian nurse before joining the RAF. He remembers further training as an RAF nurse and preparation for deployment to Afghanistan with the Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT). He gives detail on the role, composition, capabilities and development of the MERT and the use of Chinook helicopters for casualty evacuation flights. He also comments on his experience of Iraq and the contrast between Iraq and Afghanistan.
